Tesla Home Charging Cost Calculator: What Each Charge Costs

This Tesla home charging cost calculator shows what it costs to charge a Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X or Cybertruck at home, per charge, per mile, per month and per year. Pick your Tesla, your state and your home charger. It counts the power lost on the way into the battery, splits home charging from Supercharger stops, and compares the result with gas. For how long that charge takes, see the Tesla charging time calculator.

Quick answer

At the US average of $0.1844 per kWh, a full home charge of a Tesla Model Y Premium RWD costs $15.98 and a normal 20 to 80 percent top-up costs $9.59. That is 4.6¢ a mile, or about $52 a month at 13,500 miles a year. The same full charge at a Supercharger averaging $0.42 per kWh runs about $34.48. Across the lineup, a full home charge costs $11.78 for a Model 3 RWD up to $25.20 for a Cybertruck. Set your own Tesla and rate below.

The Cost Drivers

What Sets Your Tesla Charging Bill

Four inputs decide what you pay to charge a Tesla at home. Your state rate moves the answer the most, and the plug moves it more than the trim does.

12.4 to 52.0¢

Your electricity rate

Residential power runs from $0.1235 in Idaho to $0.5200 in Hawaii per kWh. The same Tesla and the same miles cost about 4.2 times more in one than the other.

4.4 to 9.5¢/mi

Your Tesla’s efficiency

Efficiency sets the cost of a mile. The Model 3 Standard RWD is the cheapest Tesla to run and the Cybertruck Cyberbeast the dearest, because of weight and shape, not battery size.

2.2×

Home vs Supercharger

A typical Supercharger at $0.42 per kWh costs about 2.2 times the home price for the same energy. Every road trip mile pulls your average up.

10 to 15%

Charging losses

Your meter records more than your battery receives. About 10 percent is lost on a Wall Connector and 15 percent on a 120 V outlet. You pay for all of it.

The Math

How the Tesla Charging Cost Is Calculated

The calculator starts from the energy your battery needs, adds the loss at the wall, then multiplies by your rate. Cost per mile uses the EPA rating, which is already measured at the wall.

Cost of a charge = (usable kWh × share added ÷ charging efficiency) × rate

Cost per mile = rate × EPA kWh per 100 miles ÷ 100

Worked example: a Tesla Model Y Premium RWD holds 78 kWh usable. A 20 to 80 percent top-up puts 46.8 kWh in the battery and 52.0 kWh through your meter. At $0.1844 per kWh that costs $9.59 and adds about 208 miles, or 4.6 cents a mile.

Wall Connector, Mobile Connector or a Wall Outlet?

The charger changes the time a lot and the cost a little. Here is one 20 to 80 percent top-up of a Tesla Model Y Premium RWD on each.

$9.59

Tesla Wall Connector, 48 A

About 4h 31m at 11.5 kW, 52.0 kWh from the wall, 90 percent efficient.

$9.59

Mobile Connector, 240 V

About 6h 45m at 7.7 kW, 52.0 kWh from the wall, 90 percent efficient.

$10.15

Mobile Connector, 120 V

About 42h 21m at 1.3 kW, 55.1 kWh from the wall, 85 percent efficient.

A Wall Connector with a typical install often runs $800 to $1,500, more if the panel needs an upgrade. The Mobile Connector on a NEMA 14-50 outlet draws up to 32 A and refills most Teslas overnight. A 120 V outlet adds only about 4 to 5 miles an hour, so it suits drivers covering under about 40 miles a day. Compare the options in our Level 1 vs Level 2 guide and see the exact hours in the Tesla charging time calculator.

Your Bill

Why Your Tesla and Your Electric Bill Disagree

The car reports the energy that went into the battery. Your meter counts the energy that left the grid, about 10 percent more on a Wall Connector. A 46.8 kWh top-up in the car is about 52.0 kWh on your bill. If you enter your rate in the Tesla app, its cost estimates can run a little low for this reason. To check your real number, note your meter and odometer on a Sunday night, charge only at home for a week, then read both again. Extra kWh times your rate is your true weekly charging cost.

Pay Less

Six Ways to Lower Your Tesla Charging Bill

1
Schedule charging for off-peak hours. On a time-of-use plan, set a scheduled charge time in the car. At 60 percent of the standard rate, a $52 monthly bill falls to about $31.
2
Leave home full before a road trip. Every Supercharger stop you skip saves about $12.95 on a Tesla Model Y Premium RWD compared with charging the same energy at home.
3
Use off-peak Supercharger hours. Many sites price late evening and early morning lower. The car shows the price before you plug in.
4
Precondition while plugged in. In winter, warm the cabin and battery from home power before you leave instead of from the battery on the road.
5
Charge from rooftop solar. Solar you use yourself usually costs less than grid power, and a car parked at home midday is an easy load to shift.
6
Move off the 120 V outlet. Level 1 wastes more power keeping the car awake. A 240 V outlet or Wall Connector saves a few percent on every charge.

Common Questions

Tesla Home Charging Cost Questions, Answered

At the US average of $0.1844 per kWh, a full home charge costs $11.78 to $25.20 depending on the model. A normal 20 to 80 percent top-up of a Tesla Model Y Premium RWD costs about $9.59. Your own number depends mostly on your electricity rate.

About $52 a month for a Tesla Model Y Premium RWD driven 13,500 miles a year and charged at home, or about $31 on an overnight time-of-use plan. If a fifth of your miles come from Superchargers, expect about $64.

A Tesla Model Y Premium RWD holds about 78 kWh usable. A full home charge costs $15.98 at the US average, $10.70 in Idaho and $45.07 in Hawaii. See every trim in our Tesla Model Y charging cost guide.

About $15.98 for a full charge of the Model 3 Long Range RWD and $11.78 for the Model 3 RWD at the US average. The Model 3 is the cheapest Tesla to run, at about 4.4 cents a mile.

Its 123 kWh pack costs about $25.20 to fill at the US average, or $100 a month at 13,500 miles a year. At a Supercharger averaging $0.42 per kWh the same fill costs about $54.38.

Home, by a wide margin. A full charge of a Tesla Model Y Premium RWD costs $15.98 at home and about $34.48 at a typical Supercharger. Off-peak Supercharger hours narrow the gap but rarely close it.

Slightly. A 120 V outlet is about 85 percent efficient against 90 percent on a Wall Connector, because the car stays awake far longer. A Tesla Model Y Premium RWD top-up costs about $10.15 instead of $9.59. The bigger issue is speed.

A full charge of a Tesla Model Y Premium RWD puts about 78 kWh into the battery and draws about 86.7 kWh from the wall. A 20 to 80 percent top-up draws about 52.0 kWh. More detail in how many kWh it takes to charge a Tesla.

Charging to 100 percent costs the same per kWh, so it only costs more because it holds more. Tesla suggests a lower daily limit on most cars and advises owners of cars with LFP batteries, such as the Model 3 RWD, to charge to 100 percent at least once a week. Follow the recommendation shown in your car.
