EV Charging Cost by Car: Every Model, Side by Side

Cost per mile, per full charge, per month and per year for 66 electric cars, SUVs and trucks sold in the US, at home and on public fast chargers, plus the gas MPG each one matches on cost. Pick any two models below to compare them at your electricity rate.

Quick answer

Charged at home at the US average of $0.1844 per kWh, EVs cost from 4.4¢ a mile for the Tesla Model 3 Standard RWD to 12.0¢ a mile for the GMC Hummer EV Pickup 3X. At 13,500 miles a year that is $597 to $1,616, against $2,160 for a 28 MPG gas car at $4.48 a gallon. Cost per mile comes from efficiency, not battery size: a full charge runs from $10.08 in the Mini Cooper SE to $43.58 in the GMC Hummer EV Pickup 3X. On public DC fast charging at $0.42 per kWh, every figure roughly doubles.

The Cost Drivers

Why Battery Size Tells You Almost Nothing

A bigger battery costs more to fill, so it seems it must cost more to run. It does not. Four things set what your EV costs to charge, and battery size only decides one of them.

24 to 65 kWh

Efficiency sets the cost of a mile

EPA consumption runs from 24 kWh per 100 miles in the Tesla Model 3 Standard RWD to 65 in the GMC Hummer EV Pickup 3X. Multiply it by your rate and you have cost per mile.

49 to 213 kWh

Battery size sets the cost of a fill

Usable capacity decides what one full charge costs, $10.08 to $43.58 at the US average, and how far you go between charges. It does not change what each mile costs.

4.2×

Your rate moves every model

Power costs $0.1235 per kWh in Idaho and $0.5200 in Hawaii. That one input outweighs the gap between most cars on this page.

2.3×

The plug moves it further

DC fast charging averages $0.42 per kWh, about 2.3 times the home rate. The same car on the same trip costs twice as much off a fast charger.

Cost per mile = rate per kWh × EPA kWh per 100 miles ÷ 100

Cost of a full charge = usable kWh ÷ 0.90 charging efficiency × rate

Usable capacity from manufacturer specs or independent measurements where makers do not publish it. Efficiency is the EPA combined rating for the default wheels and trim, measured at the wall, so normal Level 2 loss is already inside it. Winter, 75 mph driving, bigger wheels and towing all raise it.
The Two Ends

Cheapest and Most Expensive EVs to Charge

The gap between the cheapest and dearest EV to charge is about $1,020 a year at average mileage. The gap between two states, or between home and fast charging, is often bigger.

By Vehicle Type

What Each Type of EV Costs, in Gas MPG Terms

Cents per mile is the right measure, but most drivers think in MPG. This table shows the gas mileage a car would need to cost the same per mile, charged at home and on DC fast chargers.

Gas at $4.48 a gallon. A figure in red means that type loses to a 28 MPG gas car when charged only on fast chargers.

Charged at home, every type here beats almost any gas car. Charged only on fast chargers, heavy trucks and big SUVs lose most of that edge. That is why the home charging question comes before the vehicle question. Price your own setup in the EV home charging cost calculator.

Real World

What Moves Your Real Cost per Mile

1
Your electricity rate, by a factor of four. Every figure above uses $0.1844 per kWh. In Idaho the most efficient car costs about 3.0 cents a mile, in Hawaii about 12.5.
2
Wheels and drivetrain, by 10 to 25 percent. Bigger wheels and a second motor raise consumption within the same model. The smaller wheel often matters more than the brand.
3
Highway speed, by up to 35 percent. Drag rises with the square of speed. Boxy trucks and three row SUVs miss their EPA figure by more than sedans at 75 mph.
4
Winter, by 25 to 40 percent. Cabin heat and a cold battery raise energy per mile. Cars with a heat pump lose less. Precondition while plugged in.
5
Where you plug in, by about two times. Home power averages $0.18 per kWh, DC fast charging $0.42. The car does not change, only the price of the energy.
6
Battery aging, by almost nothing. A pack that loses capacity uses the same energy per mile. You lose range between charges, not money per mile.

Common Questions

EV Charging Cost by Car, Answered

By cost per mile, the Tesla Model 3 Standard RWD at about 4.4 cents a mile at the US average home rate, or $597 a year at 13,500 miles. By cost per full charge, the cheapest is the car with the smallest battery, the Mini Cooper SE at $10.08, which is a much less useful measure.

The GMC Hummer EV Pickup 3X, at about 12.0 cents a mile at home, or $1,616 a year. Heavy trucks and large SUVs sit at the top of the table because they use the most energy per mile.

More per full charge, not more per mile. The GMC Hummer EV Pickup 3X costs $43.58 to fill and the Mini Cooper SE $10.08, but the bigger pack also goes much further. Cost per mile depends on efficiency and your rate, and battery size is not part of that sum.

Multiply the EPA kWh per 100 miles by your rate. At $0.1844 per kWh, the most efficient EVs cost about $4.42 per 100 miles, a typical model like the Audi Q4 e-tron about $6.15, and the thirstiest trucks about $11.97.

Divide the gas price by the EV cost per mile. At $4.48 a gallon, the Tesla Model 3 Standard RWD charged at home matches a 101 MPG gas car and the GMC Hummer EV Pickup 3X matches 37 MPG. On DC fast charging those drop to 47 and 17 MPG.

EPA tests run at mild temperature and moderate speed. Sustained highway speed, cold weather with the heater on, bigger wheels, all wheel drive and towing all push real use above the label. Expect to beat it in gentle town driving and miss it on a winter interstate trip.

Yes. The EPA kWh per 100 miles is measured at the wall, so normal Level 2 loss is already inside cost per mile. The full charge column adds a 10 percent loss to the usable battery size, and the DC column assumes 95 percent efficiency because fast chargers skip the onboard charger.

The same efficient cars, and the margin matters more. At $0.42 per kWh the Tesla Model 3 Standard RWD costs about 9.5 cents a mile, against 25.8 cents for the GMC Hummer EV Pickup 3X. Without home charging, efficiency decides whether an EV beats a gas car at all.
